There used to be a time when the look of a new album cover was just as highly anticipated as the album itself, as it was a piece of artwork and really told a story about the artist and the music. Today we don’t tend to see that as often, but there are still artists out there who are putting in the thought and creativity needed in order to create something memorable.
Everyone tends to have an album cover or two that stand out in their mind as the best ones out there. Maybe it’s something obscure, or perhaps it’s more mainstream. So, let’s take a look at some of the coolest album covers ever designed, maybe one of your top picks will show up.
Abbey Road – The Beatles
It’s hard to beat this iconic album cover, just about everyone can picture it in their head whether they owned it or not. The cover itself is really simple, with each of the four band members walking across Abbey Road in single file. It’s the fact they are all just so cool and collected, and each one seems to have their own personality oozing through them. It’s one of those covers where everything just magically works.
Back in Black – AC/DC
Here’s another album cover that is very recognizable. Again, it’s one of those albums you don’t have to own in order to recognize. The cover is solid black, with the band’s name appearing as a white outlined logo. The album title is hard to read as it is also in a plain font that has a shadowed effect. The sheer simplicity of this cover is what makes it such a work of genius.
Born in the U.S.A – Bruce Springsteen
This particular cover is all about rock, American pride, and that swag that Springsteen became known for. The backdrop of this cover is the American flag, and the image of a person standing from behind in blue jeans, a plain white t-shirt, and a red ball cap in the back pocket just helps to drive home that American pride.
Nevermind – Nirvana
Here’s a cover that just enjoyed its 25th anniversary last year, and celebrated by depicting the same image but this time the baby in the picture is a grown adult. The cover featured a young baby who was in the nude and completely underwater. He was reaching for a dollar bill that was on a piece of string in front of him. Nirvana, of course, put the grunge scene on the map, and this is the album that really sticks out the most in many people’s minds.
